Cut It

I made a small game about cutting stuff. It started out as a tech test for a completely different game. I ended up polishing up the test and creating some levels to it and now it’s a “real” game. And by real I mean as real as a quick and dirty prototype that was created in few days can be.
Dennis will probably compile the OS X version for you mac people out there, and we could technically put the game out for the iPhone as well.
Cut It - Release 1
Download
Windows: CutIt_win.zip (5.2 Mb) (Release 1)
Mac: CutIt_mac.zip (6.7 Mb) (Release 1)
Instructions
A game about cutting up blocks.
The goal is to get the white box onto the green platform. You can cut any object in the game by dragging your mouse across the screen.
[Spacebar] resets the level.

Edit: Fixed the fps problems. It should now run 60 frames a second.

Very nice.
I had to force vsync through the video card, otherwise it would run too fast.
July 1st, 2010 at 7:45 pm
Same here. It’s running extremely fast.
July 1st, 2010 at 8:56 pm
Awesome! Reminds me of Splitter: http://www.king.com/games/sponsored-games/splitter/
July 1st, 2010 at 10:07 pm
This is such an amazing and simple idea. I love it. Runs good for me, but I think the beginning levels need some simplification and refinement. Polish it up and get this onto iPhone, it’s a winner.
July 1st, 2010 at 10:18 pm
Runs fine for me. Managed to beat each level with only one cut. Lovely little game.
July 1st, 2010 at 11:08 pm
@Bubble: I didn’t know about Splitter. I swear… Thanks for pointing that out though.
I’ll look into to the running extremely fast issue.
@Colin: That’s insanely impressive. I haven’t done all of em with only one cut…
July 1st, 2010 at 11:11 pm
Awesome! Love it… puzzles are pretty challenging, too!
July 2nd, 2010 at 5:17 am
Funny… This game runs extremely slow for me. And my setup is fine - Geforce 8800/3.00ghz dual core/4gm Ram… I think it may be windows 7… It’s nice though =)
July 2nd, 2010 at 6:16 am
Gosh that is clever!
July 2nd, 2010 at 10:51 am
Also runs very fast on my machine (P4 dual core 3GHz, 9600pro, 2GB RAM, XPSP3)- your code’s just too efficient, Petri.

Any way to change the game to fullscreen or change it to the preffered resolution??

@Petri Purho: Splitter seems like a mashup of Crayon Physics Deluxe and Cut It. From another perspective, Cut It is kind of like a mashup of Splitter and Tumbledrop.
July 2nd, 2010 at 6:59 pm
If this were fleshed out to the extent of Crayon Physics Deluxe, I would gladly put down $10-$15 for it.

Very nice work.
Having said that, there are two issues I’ve encountered:
-Like peabnuts, the game runs very slowly for me. Assuming the number above the white square is supposed to equate with 1 second, it’s running at roughly 1/10th of the game speed for me.
-Pressing ‘n’ seems to send you back to level 1. In and of itself, that’s fine, but given that it’s right next to the spacebar, I accidentally pressed it at level 7-8 or so and had to start over, so a warning would be nice. Also, if you press ‘n’ at level 1, you have to restart the app because the first level fails to draw again.

Who effin’ cares if it has the same mechanic as Splitter. Do you dumbasses say “Mario Ripoff” on every platformer and “Wolf 3D Ripoff” on every FPS ever released? F it, and F all of you. Oh yeah, the new Metal Gear has a cutting mechanic, maybe they also copied that from Splitter.
Good job Petri

Very fun game! It does run great on linux with Wine, but still, if there’s a Mac OS X version, it can’t be that much effort to make an actual linux version, right?
July 9th, 2010 at 4:23 am
Ran fine for me on a what must now me a decade-old P4 laptop (WinXP). Then again, I don’t know if it should be running “quickly” or not, and if/how that would affect how I played it with timing some cuts and all. Liked it a lot.
July 11th, 2010 at 2:54 am
Gah, finished all but the last level, had to “M” key it…
July 12th, 2010 at 8:36 pm
Wow, so cool! My cousin and I took turns trying each level and had a blast toying with the physics available to us. Thanks for the game!
July 14th, 2010 at 4:09 am
Whew, banged my head with the last one, and came here for help. Good thing I found none, as it took only 20 sweaty minutes to finish.
July 14th, 2010 at 6:22 am
I get a blank canvas — no objects. I see the instructions to cut here, but nothing to cut; and when I follow the instructions, there’s no effect. Skipping ahead with [m], I see the later levels are also blank.
OS: XP SP3; Video: Intel 965 Express Chipset via a Lenovo laptop.

Now about completing each level with just one cut, Colin can’t be honest or I am just dumb. I’d like to hear his one cut solution for the last level.
I myself have managed to beat every level exept for the 3rd last with one cut, as I got really lucky with the 2nd last. Tips would be much appreciated.

For those who want more Cut It levels: You can edit them yourself. Just open the directory “cut_it\data\” and edit with paint (or similar prog) files called level_01.bmp … level_02.bmp ect. You can even add more levels for eg. level_14.bmp..15..16 and so on.

This is awesome
I think slowness may be direct draw driver related. I just solved mine on a GMA 500 (ungh!) video based device.
seriously - with a little extra, this would be an awesome marketable game. Think ds/ipod/pc/wii.
