Thanks Nikita, for the tips. The game night idea was great. I've actually been using that every once in a while. When we get together with bunch of friends to play "some real games", I usually harsh everybody with a new early prototype of game I've been creating. I really haven't being doing that much of paper prototyping so I don't have that much experience in testing them. But for the electric counter parts of paper prototyping a great way to find an test audience is to release them on the internet. There are couple of game development related forums, where you can find an audience for pretty much any prototype. And of course there's always the <a href="http://experimentalgameplay.com" rel="nofollow">experimentalgameplay.com</a>, where you can exhibit even wackier ideas.

Patrick,
I don't think you can be shy about trying to find like minded individuals to play test your games. If you have an idea of who your audience for a game is, you need to be agressive about finding people in that demographic. Testing stuff on your wife/girlfriend can only take you so far. I mean there are certain games that I try out on my girlfriend but other games I know I'm just wasting my time showing her. We try to do a game night every week with some friends of the studio and sometimes we'll slip our own stuff to play test (a little medicine with the honey if you will). When all else fails... offer pizza.

I'm also avid reader of Lost Garden. Danc has written alot of good posts. Only problem is I tend to end up wasting lot of good development time when I visit Lost Garden.

Good post/collection of posts, I personally love the resources and information that Danc posts and think it can help lots of people in their design efforts.

Patrick: What area are you in?

@Patrick: I think most professional game designers test their paper prototypes with their <strike>QA deparment</strike> wifes and girlfriends.

I read a bunch about the utility of paper prototyping. I made a paper prototype of a game. Then, I hit a brick wall. I'm just not around people who like games. I don't have game-people that I can see face-to-face to have them play with my paper. Feh.

[...] And while we’re on the topic of awesome you really should check out Kloonigames recent post on rapid prototyping. Partly because it features stuff written by me, but there’s some actual relevant stuff in there too. [...]
